Lochside

Published 13/08/2025

Lochside was a whisky distillery in the town of Montrose, Angus, Scotland. It should not be confused with the whisky distillery of the same name, which existed in Campbeltown between 1830 and 1852. The Lochside distillery had a short life, from 1957 to 1991. Although it operated as a grain and malt distillery for a while, it never had a major breakthrough in part because it was constantly being resold and no one was responsible for the distillery for long.

Lomond

Published 13/08/2025

Along with Inverleven, Lomond was not a distillery as such but rather a distillery within a distillery. Within the vast Dumbarton grain distillery established in 1838 a malt distillery (a pair of pot stills) was added to support the creation of the Ballentine’s blend. Seeking to create more of a lighter fruity spirit Alistair Cunningham and Arthur Warren designed a new adjustable pot still known as a Lomond still and in 1959 it was pressed into action imaginatively as the Lomond distillery.

The Macduff Distillery is located in the coastal town of the same name in the Eastern Highlands, where the Deveron River flows into the North Sea. Production of Macduff whisky The water for production is supplied from nearby sources such as the Gelly spring. The malt is delivered and is partially peated. It is worth mentioning the tube-shaped, horizontally arranged condensers which enable intensive copper contact. The asymmetrical arrangement of the stills is also unusual.

Production of Mackmyra whisky From the barley to the water, Mackmyra only uses Swedish ingredients. However, the two copper stills come from the renowned Scottish coppersmith Forsyths. The 37 meter high production building is unique and was specially designed for single malt production. In the seven-story building, the ingredients are transported to the top floor and the rest is done by gravity.
