In December 2000, Reynier embarked on a daring journey to breathe new life into Bruichladdich, a distillery that had initially cost £6.5m. Reviving it as a private, operational single malt venture, he brought a fresh approach to the industry, introducing the concept of “terroir” into whiskey making – a term traditionally associated with wine production.

His leadership at Bruichladdich was characterized by an innovative spirit, leveraging the unique characteristics of the Islay landscape to influence the barley and, consequently, the spirit produced. Despite facing skepticism and challenges, including financial hurdles and finding willing investors, Reynier steered Bruichladdich towards success, a testament to his vision and determination.

A New Beginning at Waterford

After the sale of Bruichladdich to Rémy Cointreau in 2012, a development that Reynier voted against, he did not rest on his laurels. In 2014, he acquired a modern Guinness brewery in Waterford, transforming it into a distillery that started producing whiskey in 2015.

Continuing his exploration of “terroir,” Reynier, alongside Head Distiller Ned Gahan and Head Brewer Neil Conway, is diving deep into how soil and landscape affect the quality and characteristics of whiskey. The Waterford team embraces this unique approach, promising exciting developments in the whiskey industry’s future landscape.
