La Alazana whisky distillery
Contents
La Alazana is a family-run farm distillery located in Las Golondrinas, near Lago Puelo in the Andean region of Chubut, Patagonia, Argentina. Founded in 2011 by the Serenelli family, it is recognised as the first dedicated single malt whisky distillery in Argentina. The distillery grows part of its own barley, malts on-site, uses Andean spring water and matures whisky in a range of casks selected to reflect both local climate and international influence.
Situated in a cool mountain valley at the foothills of the Andes, La Alazana benefits from wide temperature swings, clean air and low humidity, which contribute to a distinct maturation profile. The distillery is positioned as a pioneer of Patagonian terroir whisky, combining traditional Scottish-style double distillation with local agriculture and experimental ageing projects.
House Style
La Alazana produces single malt whisky shaped by mountain climate, local barley and a mix of American, European and wine-seasoned oak. Expected flavours include cereal sweetness, orchard fruit, gentle spice, vanilla, honey and occasional wine-derived red fruit. Peat use is limited and occasional, with the focus primarily on malt character and cask influence.
Production
- Barley: Grown partly on the distillery’s own farm and malted on-site.
- Water: Drawn from nearby Andean mountain springs.
- Fermentation: Long, cool ferments to promote fruit character.
- Stills: Copper pot stills, double distillation, built in Argentina.
- Maturation: Ex-bourbon, sherry, wine, cognac, and virgin oak casks selected for climate response.
- Climate: Patagonian mountain valley, with cold winters and dry air accelerating cask interaction.
Visitor Centre
Visits are possible by prior arrangement; the distillery is located on a private rural property and not run as a full public tourism site.
