Slovenia is a very young whisky-producing nation, with activity emerging primarily in the 2010s. Unlike traditional whisky countries, its scene remains small, with only a handful of dedicated producers and a broader backdrop of established fruit brandy and spirits distillation.

The country’s leading whisky producer, Broken Bones Distillery in Ljubljana, began distilling in the mid-2010s and has since gained international recognition, including awards at the World Whiskies Awards. Alongside it, newer entrants such as 2K Whisky and planned projects like Blackmill Distillery signal gradual growth and increasing ambition within the category.

While the number of producers is limited, Slovenian whisky is defined by its craft-focused approach. Small-scale production, experimentation, and the use of local materials—particularly Slovenian oak for cask maturation—are key characteristics. Many producers draw on Scottish methods while adapting them to local conditions and resources.

There is currently no dedicated geographical indication or formal category framework specific to Slovenian whisky, and production follows general EU spirits regulations. As a result, the category remains flexible and open to innovation.

The modern timeline begins in the 2010s with the establishment of Broken Bones, followed by incremental expansion through the late 2010s and early 2020s. Though still niche, Slovenian whisky is developing a distinct identity rooted in craftsmanship, local influence, and experimental spirit, with potential for further growth as new distilleries come online.
