The Mannochmore (Gaelic for “great monk”, pronounced like “Mánnochmór”) Distillery is located just outside, south of Elgin. How does Mannochmore Single Malt taste? Mannochmore whiskeys are oily, fruity, slightly smoky and always show a floral note. As a rule, these malts are also significantly dry. Mannochmore products have only been available on the market as single malts since 1992. The largest proportion of the annual production supplies Diageo’s blended Scotch whiskies.

A distillery was established in Midleton in 1825 by the Murphy family, who also operated a brewery in Cork. Two years earlier, the regulations on alcohol taxation were relaxed, so that the distillery was built on a large scale. Among other things, there was therefore the largest pot still in the world in Midleton. The whiskey from Midleton was particularly popular locally, the Paddy brand, which has existed since around 1920, was named after its most successful sales representative Paddy Flaherty and still exists today.

Founded in 1969 after some three years of searching the Miyagikyo Distillery is a stark contrast to the coastal Yoichi distillery being surrounded by the rolling hills and forests of the Miyagi region. Originally know as the Sendai distillery it now takes its name from the Miyagi Valley where the Nikkawa and Sendai rivers meet. Having been expanded twice the distillery has more than twice the production capacity of the first Nikka distillery, featuring four pot stills and most interestingly two Coffey stills made by Blairs Limited of Glasgow moved from the Nikka Nishinomiya bottling plant.
