Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. dreamed of building a showcase distillery as a destination for tourists. The Colonel’s once glorious Old Taylor Distillery was founded in 1887 and shuttered in 1972. Since then it has been in a state of decay, overrun by weeds, snakes and graffiti for more than 40 years. Mother Nature has been reclaiming this 113 acre piece of land and its 20 plus buildings along Glenn’s Creek in Millville, Kentucky near Frankfort.

Chichibu

The Chichibu Distillery founded in 2004 by Ichiro’s Malt is Japans newest distillery and the first to be founded in 31 years. Production began in 2008 under the watchful eye of Ichiro Akuto the distillery owner, manager and Master Distiller who is also the grandson of the founder of the now-closed Hanyu distillery. The current annual production of 60 000 liters is distilled in a pair of small 2,000 litre capacity copper pot stills, manufactured by Forsyths of Elgin, Scotland.

Chita

Founded in 1972 in Aichi Prefecture, the Chita distillery is located near the village of the same name, both being named for the Chita Peninsula. Its foggy and calm coast offers a unique backdrop for the creation of Chita whisky. Suntory’s Chita Grain Distillery creates three types of grain whisky from corn. The three variations are the clean one, which is distilled 4 times, the medium-heavy one is distilled 3 times and the heavy one only twice.

Clonakilty

The Clonakilty Distillery is a young whiskey distillery near the coast in West Cork, Ireland. Ireland’s whiskey industry is in a renaissance that is giving the new project a strong tailwind. In the eighth generation of the Scully family, they work the fields of West Cork and now they start the whiskey business. The Clonakilty distillery, which was only officially opened in March 2019, will produce a classic triple distilled single pot still Irish whiskey.

Clynelish

On the way to the far north of Scotland and the counties of Sutherland and Caithness lies the Clynelish distillery. Few whisky distilleries are as far flung into the rugged northern Highlands of Scotland. Clynelish is close to the coastal village of Brora, which is also the name of it’s more famous sister distillery. Clynelish means “slope of the garden” in Gaelic and is pronounced “Cleinlish”. After Clynelish is one of the key malts in Johnny Walker Blended Scotch, but the parent company Diageo never really put the distillery in the spotlight, and it has largely gone overlooked by the average consumer.
